Managing Your Diet With Natural Foods
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

Generally speaking, whole or natural foods encompass anything unprocessed or unrefined, without additives like fat, salt or sugar. They may be grains, fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish and non-homogenized milk. Whole food is not necessarily organic, although they share many of the same agricultural techniques.

Some ardent vegans and vegetarians promote eating only natural, raw foods and avoiding all genetically modified foods. Whole Foods is also the name of a grocery store chain specializing in “ethically responsible” food.

whole foods
There are many benefits to eating whole and natural foods. As Whole Foods Market chairman John Mackey says, “There’s no inherent reason why business cannot be ethical, socially responsible, and profitable.” Shoppers can pat themselves on the back for helping the small organic farmer in America, versus foreign workers across the country.

Those who shop specifically at the Whole Foods stores can also feel good knowing that the lowest wage for employees is $13.15/hour, with benefits that include healthcare. Furthermore, no executive makes more than 14 times the employee average.

They’ve also purchased a year’s worth of wind power energy for their stores. Fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats without hormones, preservatives, pesticides and other unnatural additives seem like the most basic components of a healthy weight plan with whole foods .

healthy diet
On the other hand, there are some criticisms of Whole Foods Market and comparable organic stores. For instance, one banner proclaims “Our Commitment to the Local Farmer,” when in reality the “local farmer” lives in California. It’s a common misconception that “organic” and “local” are synonymous.

Given the cost and damaging effects of the energy consumption used in transport, should someone buy an “organic” banana from Costa Rica rather than a non-organic locally grown banana? It’s a real conundrum for those who want to “do the right thing, environmentally.”

Another common misconception is that “organic” means “small family farmer.” However, most of the organic farms featured at Whole Foods are from five or six conglomerates in California, which are hardly small operations.

raw foods
Even though prices are high, the foods market is doing some things to promote thrift. To decrease spending, consumers can shop the sales, only buy as much food as they’re going to eat, buy snack food wholesale items and take advantage of promotional rebates.

They’ve also offered “Value Tours” of their stores to show consumers how to save a few bucks and include more money-saving tips on the company blog. “We’ve been nimble, and we’re really able to help our shoppers when they may have to shop with a budget for the first time,” said Whole Foods spokeswoman Kate Lowery.

How About Starting A Cake Decorating Business
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

There was once in a food magazine a man who was featured because of his mastery in baking cakes and decorating them. Well, that’s not new. Anybody can learn how to start a cake decorating business but the weird thing is, this man has been locked up in jail for many years because he was accused of a crime that he have not done. He languished behind bars for 5 years or so then, miracles of all miracles, he was acquitted later and was found out that they have apprehended the wrong man. Well, that was good news. Now, he can go back and live a normal life and all he has to do now find something useful like a job or work. To his dismay, nobody wants to hire an ex-convict like him and in the first place, he is not a convict. He was just a victim of a circumstance but he can’t do anything about it. So, he hopped from one job opportunity to another but nobody will accept him after seeing his records. After that, only one thing in his mind has popped out: he needed to survive and he doesn’t need anyone but himself and the Almighty to make it through the rain, so to speak.

So, he started looking for some home-based business opportunity with less investment. Because his wife is good at cooking, he learned to understand cook books and he got hooked up with cakes. He’s fond of eating cakes and no wonder he’s a big person. So, he thought, “Why not start a cake decorating business? After all, I like cakes so it is just appropriate that I need something that is of my interest.” Well, and he really did. He began to teach himself how to make his own pastry and decorate them. In at least 6 to 9 months, his enterprise is going quite excellent and there is no one there behind his back, say, a boss, who will peer over his shoulder from time to time and watch his every move. With his business, he is enjoying both time and financial freedom.

Being in jail for so many years was a blessing in disguise for him. Now, his home cake decorating business has brought him to all parts of the country and he is only a phone call away if somebody wants to buy a cake from him. The best part is, he learned everything right in his own home using only the most efficient tool today- the Internet.

Let’s Learn How To Cook
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

Cooking has long been a passion of people throughout ages, cultures, and locations.
Almost every area has its original style of cooking, and of course, each area has a method of instructing people how to cook.
The common thing amongst all cooking traditions is that everyone wants to fully utilize their cooking training.
What is cooking all about if not serving a practical and useful purpose?
Here are some ways to make the most out of your cooking training:
Many people perfer a seafood recipe for cooking. But let’s start with chicken for now.
1. Attend all the cooking classes. Logically, if you miss out on any of the cooking lessons,
you’ll miss out on the lessons covered for that day.
Cooking is an art and you need to be present to really experience the food that is being cooked.
This is unlike other things which you can just look at the information and understand it easily.
When you are cooking, you need to apply all your senses or you will miss out on the experience.
2. Go beyond more than just following recipes. To really get into the heart of cooking you have to be aware of everything that is happening.

You shouldn’t just follow the recipes, although you need to know them by heart.
An important thing to know is what is going on when you following the instructions for a recipe.
Figure out the reason why you add the salt at the end of cooking instead of during cooking and why you stir all the time instead of once in a while.
You need to understand every step to master the art of cooking.
3. Rehearse what you’ve been taught. It is said that ‘practice makes perfect’ and that’s right.
Cooking is more of a skill than a talent and all skills need to be practiced to be mastered.

Try out what you have learned every time you get the chance.
Not only will this help you sharpen your cooking skills, this will also help you remember the things you have learned.
4. Offer your food to others to eat. What’s the point of learning to cook if not to feed others as well as yourself?
you should be able to share the delicious masterpieces you have created with the food with the people who would actually enjoy and appreciate your cooking skills after eating that food
Getting the most out of your cooking training is easy.
You just need to keep on cooking and keep on feeding and soon enough you’ll be the master cook you’ve always been dreamed about.

Helping You Improve Your Home Brewing
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

brews

If you live in a rural area, then you know how difficult it can sometimes be to find a great cold beer to enjoy. Some counties and cities do not allow the sale of alcoholic beverages within their borders. Even if you get lucky and have a local bar or pub, you may not find the choices that you desire. One way to circumvent this problem is to give home brewing a chance. You can simply make the type of beer that you want.

No matter what type of beer you choose to brew, there are four things that all beer brewing processes share in common. All contain yeast, water, malt and hops. The variations in the type of beer come from the brewing system used. Some beers are cold brewed, meaning that the entire process is kept below a certain refrigeration point. Warm brewed beers are the opposite. These beers are kept at room temperature.

If you are up to the challenge of giving home brewing a shot, then you may want to start off by purchasing a beer brewing kit. The kit will contain all of the ingredients and instructions that you will need in order to brew your beer. Before you ring up that purchase though, review what comes with the kit. If you know that you do not have all of the necessary equipment, such as beer bottles or a keg, then you can always pick up whatever else is needed at the same time or you can go online to order it.

One of the most important facts when homebrewing is to make sure that all of your brewing equipment is sterilized. It will not do your newly brewed beer any good if your batch is spoiled due to contamination. Beer will go bad if left outside of a bottle. The process of brewing your own beer, while relatively simple, has many steps that should be followed. Your first few batches of beer should follow the recipe closely. After you are familiar with the process, then you can begin experimenting with different ingredients to make a unique cold beer that will be perfect at the end of a long day of work.

Home brewing your own beer can be a great pastime. Just imagine your friends and family sitting down with one of your own beverages. If at first your brew is not to your liking, then do not give up. There are many different beers out there to experiment with. The real joy of making your own beer is in experiencing the whole process. It may seem overwhelming at first but it will be well worth it when you have that finished product.

Unlock The Secrets Of Different Water Types
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

Sparkling water is just one of all bottled water types  sometimes referred to as “spring water” but that’s not really accurate. The processing and origin of various types of bottled water really make them little different in taste and content. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-the federal agency that regulates all types of bottled water-has established guidelines called standards of identity that classify bottled water into several different water types:

Spring Water: Ah, the ever-popular “spring water” is defined as bottled water derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface of the earth. To qualify as spring water, it must be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring. If the collection process uses some type of an external force, the water must be from the same stratum as the spring and must retain the quality and all of the same physical properties of water that flows naturally from a spring to the surface.

Purified Water: This is a type of drinking water that has been treated with processes such as distillation, deionization or reverse osmosis (we’ll get to those terms later). Basically, this just means that the bacteria and dissolved solids have been removed from the water by some process, making it “purified.” This type of bottled water is usually labeled as purified drinking water but can also be labeled for the specific process used to produce it, for example, reverse osmosis drinking water or distilled drinking water. Many bottled water brands are actually purified drinking water.

Mineral Water: Okay, ready for some science? Mineral water contains not less than 250 parts per million total dissolved solids and is defined by its constant level and relative proportions of mineral and trace elements at the point of emergence from the source. No minerals can be added to the water.
Sparkling Bottled Water: Yes, the fizzy kind. But what makes it fizzy? This type of water contains the same amount of carbon dioxide that it had when it emerged from its source. Sparkling bottled waters may be labeled as sparkling drinking water, sparkling mineral water, sparkling spring water etc.
Artesian Water/Artesian Well Water: Ready for some more science? Artesian water comes from a well that taps a confined aquifer-a water-bearing underground layer of rock or sand-in which the water level is above the top of the aquifer.

Well Water: This one is pretty easy. Well water is exactly what it sounds like- water from a hole made in the ground that taps the water source.

Municipal/Tap Water: Of course, you know it’s the type of water piped right into your home. While tap water isn’t regulated by the FDA (but we thought it should be included here), it must meet the strict standards of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Municipal tap water is generally of excellent quality, however, many people prefer the taste and enjoy the convenience of bottled water, which, in most cases, undergoes additional processing and often retains the pleasant characteristics of its natural source.

Bottled Water Regulation: The FDA is responsible for the food and pharmaceutical industries, two industries where safety and quality are of paramount importance. And as expected, The FDA is packed of serious customers. Therefore, bottled water is one of the most extensively regulated packaged-food products. The bottled water industry receives government oversight from federal and state agencies across the country, providing consumers with multiple layers of safety assurance - from the finished water product back to the source. Bottled water need to be tested on equal parameters as the tap water, however the standards are, in few cases, stricter than for tap water. State governments inspect and certify the “sources” of spring water, meaning that samples have been analyzed and found to be of a safe and sanitary quality according to regulation.

Facts About the Natural Organic Food Market
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

natural and organic food

Natural organic food has become all the rage for health conscious individuals. Most people cannot walk into a local grocery store and not find a section that carries natural and organic food. The sales of organic food have skyrocketed in the United States. The annual sales bring in an estimated $29.7 billion dollars each year. The demand for natural organic food has both reasons for demands and reasons that the market may be hindered because of the quick growth.

Natural organic food has three main reasons for the drive in increase in demand and sales. The number one reason is the continued upward movement in consumers health consciousness. More and more people are starting to take control of their health, this in turn makes them want to eat healthier, thus the rise in demand for organic food products.

With the increase of E coli, salmonella, and Listeria, people are becoming more aware of the food they put into their bodies. Consumers want to be healthy at all costs and natural organic food offers the assurance of no pesticides or toxins. This assurance will decrease the amount of infections from occurring due to the lingering affect of chemicals. One other reason people are choosing natural organic food is because of the demand for environmentally friendly materials. Organic food products are not only free of toxins, but they are also packaged in “green” materials that can easily be recycled. With the planet trying to take a stance on taking care of the environment, any type of material that can be recycled is a plus.

Even though several reasons exist why natural organic food is a plus, a few reasons do exist that seem to be hindering the growth of this type of market. In organic farming, labor shortages are a great setback. Farmers are increasing the production of crops and livestock yet a shortage of qualified inspectors is on the rise. With limits in inspections a lack of consistent supply to the markets is starting to occur. Since demand is increasing, a consistently short supply is the worst thing that could possibly happen to the natural organic food industry.

Since the demand for natural organic food is increasing, the market has exploded with revenue. With recent news of E coli outbreaks, an increasing awareness for the health conscious consumer, as well as the need for materials that can be recycled easy, the organic food industry is the logical choice. However, with farmers being forced to decrease production resulting in a consistently short supply of materials, the organic food market share can go either way. As the problems are worked out within the industry, natural organic foods will continue to rise and so will the revenue that it generates.

2008 Snack Food Industry Expo
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

healthy snack foods

According to snack food industry professionals, 2008 has been an extremely good year with a 4% increase in sales, despite the economic recession. Granola bars saw the biggest surge, with 11% growth, followed by 8% increase in yogurt sales growth, 5% increase in chocolate sales, 5% increase in snack nuts/seeds and a 4% increase in salty snacks and crackers. This increase is primarily in healthy snacks, experts say, which directly corresponds with the public’s increased interest in eating healthy, and manufacturers are eager to please with new health-conscious products and packaging.

It’s surprising to some that snack food industries have skyrocketed during a time of recession, especially when snack food prices have increased anywhere from 4-11% over the last year, due to increased energy and commodity costs. However, consumers are flocking to Wal-Mart for their fair-priced trail mixes and coated snacks. For the most part, weight management and nutrition headlines are driving consumer interest and demand for healthy snack foods, with 62% of consumers saying they eat foods to prevent or manage health conditions and 42% are seeking snacks with health benefits. Yet industry leaders add that the more indulgent treats still comprise two-thirds of all sales.

Sam’s Club has been a leader in the snack food industry by aligning themselves with environmentally friendly and healthy foods manufacturers. “We will favor suppliers that meet our standards for sustainability,” explains Heather Mayo, VP of merchandising. She said consumers want healthy snacks, energy boosters, portion-control sizes, on-the-go products and increased levels of social responsibility. “Consumers are more educated than ever,” she added.

Additionally, there has been a snack food industry evolution as far as ingredients go. On everyone’s mind at this year’s SNAXPO (snack exposition), they discussed how to lower trans fats and alter plant genetics to improve the nutrition and flavor of their food snacks. Mary LaGuardia, an omega-9 oils market manager for Dow AgroSciences, explained the concept of thoughtful plant breeding. “We have gotten rid of trans with low levels of saturated fat without sacrificing stability, flavor and shelf life,” she said. Soybean oil can reduce trans and saturated fats, as well as produce omega 3 fatty acids. Many of these techniques will revolutionize the industry in the coming years as we shift toward a more health-conscious society.

Healthy Snack Food Choices

Healthy foods

The dreaded mid-day slump usually rears its ugly head between 2 and 4 pm each day. Your eyes sort of glaze over, your body begins to feel heavier and your eyeballs are burning with a headache. If only you could just close your eyes and take a 30-minute power-nap! Unfortunately, you’re at work and there’s far too much to do. To get you through the rest of the day, you need the right snack food to keep you motivated and eating healthy.

Healthy foods don’t always have to taste like Styrofoam. For a snack, bagels and bran muffins taste pretty darn good! A 200-calorie bagel will give you 11% of your daily recommended iron, which is particularly good for women who don’t always retain iron so well. Additionally, you’ll get solid doses of B vitamins, like niacin, riboflavin and thiamin. You may be tempted to load on the cream cheese, but there are delicious flavored skim ricottas that come in blueberry and strawberry that might be a healthier choice. A bran muffin delivers three grams of fiber and 1.8 mg of iron (10% of your daily value).

Sometimes you’re super hungry and a snack food like granola bars or apples just won’t do. Lunch snacks, like Mexican-style beans and tuna fish will fill you right up and give you the energy you need to make it through the day. Just a half cup of Mexican beans will give you 26% of your daily fiber. A good way to eat them may be to mash them up or heat them into a creamy dip or wrap them up into a burrito. Bean soup or teriyaki bean dishes are other delicious alternatives. Three ounces of tuna canned in water is a great way to get B12 (32% of the daily dose) and a great serving of protein.

They say “variety is the spice of life,” and this is particularly true when it comes to snack food. Instead of just eating that half cup of frozen yogurt, why not throw 1/2 cup of blueberries on top to add texture, flavor and nutritional value? Instead of just gobbling down apple slices, spread a tablespoon of smooth creamy peanut butter on top. You don’t have to feel guilty about these 150-calorie treats! Coming in at 200 calories, you can have a cup of low-fat cottage cheese with 1/2 cup of fresh peach slices or a 1/3 cup of tasty granola. By taking variety and portion size into consideration, you’ll be eating health foods without even realizing!

Choose The Best Water Machine
Archive for March, 2009 | by admin |In Uncategorized | No Comments

There must be hundreds of water machines on the market – just do a Google search.

Pure, clean, drinking water is required across the world and is quickly turning into the most highly prized resource of all. However, ninety-seven percent of the water which is found on the earth is in the oceans. It is undrinkable and is unusable for most culinary and commercial purposes. Only three (3) percent of the world’s water is fresh. Of this three percent, two-thirds is locked in glaciers and polar ice caps. Of the remaining one percent of the earth’s water, about half is located beneath the earth’s surface.

Rivers and lakes contain approximately 1/50th of one percent of the earth’s water. A significant portion of this fraction has been contaminated by industrial civilization, and much of the remaining “freshwater” is severely polluted or biologically contaminated. Unfortunately, this pollution has begun to reach our underground water as well. Continually, on any given day, more than one-half of the earth’s human population is ill, with the majority of these cases caused by waterborne contaminants.

The World Health Organization of the United Nations estimates that eighty percent of this illness is caused by contaminated drinking water. Many countries throughout the world, not just third world countries, have inadequate water treatment facilities, or a complete lack of treatment facilities. It is becoming clear that new technologies are needed in every segment of the water treatment industry: agriculture, horticulture, food processing, industrial waste treatment, public water supplies, and sewage treatment. These systems must be environmentally-friendly and rely on methods and processes that are not chemically based.

Water machine products are best described as atmospheric water generators. Air2Water is among one of these, that is a family of water generating machines which uses innovative yet simple technique (patented and developed by Worldwide Water, Inc.) that extracts pure drinking water from the air. The machine first pulls air through an electrostatic filter removing 93% of all air borne particles. As the machine collects the water it drops into a collection tray and immediately passes into Ultraviolet (UV) light, where the water stays in contact with UV rays for approximately 30 minutes. This kills 99.9% of all germs and bacteria in the water. Then the water is pumped through a sediment screen into a 24 volt water pump, and back by two (2) solid carbon block one micron water filters, NSF 53 approved, that removes 99.9% of any volatile organic chemicals (VOC’s) that may be in the water. It also filtered through our proprietary Ultrafiltration (UF) with membrane pore size of 0.015 micron to remove virtually all bacteria and common viruses. The water then goes through a half calcite, half GAC mineral additive where it is then pumped into a reservoir tank. The water is then recycled every hour through the UV and back into the reservoir tank. The water is then chilled or heated and dispensed to the consumers.

One of Time magazine’s best inventions for 2006 is called the Rainmaker. Arthur C Clarke the science-fiction writer. Clarke once wrote that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Case in point: this water-harvesting machine, which can pull up to 500 gal. of drinkable water per day out of thin air. Its precise workings aren’t public, but they use a chemical process similar to the one that causes salt to absorb moisture from the air (and clump up your saltshaker). The water machine isn’t particularly portable–its 20 ft. long–but it will be a godsend for disaster victims or troops in desert combat.

These are just two of the many machines that are on the market to provide clean drinking water.
